This 1930s colonial, another owned and renovated by Saigontourist, is done just right (okay, close, at least). The renovated Grand has a serene, tasteful atmosphere, and there are some choice features, like the lovingly restored iron elevator at center. The Grand is at its best when taking advantage of its long history, and rooms in the older block are much more charming than the more bland, chain-hotel units in the new wing. Deluxe rooms clustered in the old building near the elevator have classic high ceilings, rich wood floors, and a comfortable colonial charm for the price tag ($125). All rooms are big, with simple dark wood furniture and large wardrobes, and without the musty smell that plagues many Saigon hotels. The bathrooms are small but have big counters and hair dryers. The lobby is bright, the staff is friendly, and the location on Dong Khoi couldn't be better -- right in the thick of it. The quiet atmosphere here suggests tourists rather than business, though, and it's got all the right amenities: Most notable are the quiet sitting areas and bar, and the central courtyard's small but peaceful pool area, a unique escape from busy Ho Chi Minh City.
